Raimundus Lullius, Liber de venatione [and]
De anima rationali [and] Liber de natura.
Manuscript, Italy, early 15th century (BPH 101)

Three philosophical works by the Majorcan philosopher, mystic, theologian and novelist Ramón Lull (ca.1232-1316), whose aim it was to create an understanding between Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Although Lullius is extremely well represented with titles of his works in Lenglet's famous Histoire de la philosophie hermétique he is not a hermetic philosopher! All alchemical works attributed to him –more than 110- date after his death. There is no trace of hermetism in his genuine philosophical and religious works (c. 250 treatises). It is his commentator, Bernard de Lavinheta, who was the first to interpret his works in a hermetic sense (1523).

Lullism became particularly associated with natural magic and cabala during the Renaissance: Lull was a key figure to Pico, Lefèvre d'Étaples and Bruno.
