history of the creation of the world until Abraham. Had not maistre
Mellon referred to the sources of many of his verses with marginal comments,
one might not have recognized this work by an unknown, occasional poet
as being profoundly influenced by kabbala and hermetica: amongst the
authors quoted explicitly are the kabbalist Gikatilla and his commentary
on the Zohar, Philo of Alexandria and Lazarelli's Crater Hermetis.
Furthermore there are references to works by Pico della Mirandola and
Agrippa and last but not least to the Asclepius: in the margin
of a stanza in Book I Mellon quotes 'Magnum miraculum est homo - Mercurius
in Pimander'.
