For this edition Francesco Sansovino merged the commentaries of Cristoforo Landino (1481) and Alessandro Vellutello (1544). Unlike Landino, Vellutello was not so much preoccupied with the divine origin of poetry as with a strict, almost factual adherence to the text in hand. He annotated for instance passages in which Dante had alluded to contemporary persons, and added historical notes based on classical sources. Presentation copy, with coloured-in woodcuts. |
